Last year, in June 2023, he shared his diagnosis of stage four rectal cancer on Instagram. The emotional post began with ‘hard to write this’.

The Dario G star wrote that he had got "stage 4 rectal cancer and a shadow on my liver… Gonna give it my best shot though. Stay positive, cos I am. Always. Seeing the doctors on Friday to discuss the next steps.”

In December 2023, he mentioned undergoing chemotherapy in a health update and was feeling positive about his treatment. However, the DJ was then admitted to Manchester’s Christie Hospital in May and received IV antibiotics for 16 to 18 hours daily to combat a severe infection.

But Spencer’s next social media update would now, in retrospect, be heartbreaking. He was so positive about his recovery, grateful for the support of his followers and fans, and ecstatic to be leaving his hospital bed.

"I'm infection free now but feel I already have the energy to defeat this fully with the next stages, even though a little rest and recoup time might BE appreciated," he wrote, looking forward to the future.

That was less than a month ago and, as the Daily Mirror confirms, Paul Spencer did lose his battle with the relentless disease on the 17th of June 2024, a year after sharing his diagnosis with the world.

A heartfelt statement was released by his family on Dario G's Instagram stating: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Paul Spencer earlier today. He was positive until the end but this was one battle he could not fight anymore."

"He leaves behind a wonderful musical legacy and many happy memories for many people. He will be sadly missed by everyone who loved him. Shine bright our big star - K, A and H xxx #dariog."

Dario G was a dance music trio consisting of Spencer, Scott Rosser, and Stephen Spencer (despite the same surname, Stephen and Paul were unrelated). They were named after Dario Gradi, the manager of Crewe Alexandra football club at the time.

The original group became hugely popular in the 90s, with their 1997 debut single 'Sunchyme', reaching Number Two on the UK charts. It lost out on the top spot to Elton John’s song for Princess Diana, 'Candle In The Wind’.

Dario G released the song 'Carnaval de Paris' for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, which reached Number Five in the UK charts. Their subsequent single, ‘Sunmachine', took David Bowie's vocals from his 1969 track 'Memory Of A Free Festival'.

In 2010, Dario G was still going strong, collaborating with other artists to produce music. He joined forces with rapper Pitbull to record the song 'Game On' for the Official FIFA 2010 World Cup soundtrack.

Floods of emotional messages came in tribute to the DJ and person who was lost after leaving the hospice (pictured) so positively. Fellow producer and DJ Sigala highlighted one of Paul’s most common petitions on Instagram over the past year: 'Go get yourself checked'.

"I'm passing on that message to anyone reading this, as I'm sure he would want me to. Our health should be more of a priority!" Sigala continued, while also stating Spencer will "live on forever through his music".

The world has lost a creative name in music and his positivity shone through. "I've written countless motivational quotes for my own use in the better times to save for the hard times (and they work). Maybe one day some will make it into lyrics for songs," he wrote on Instagram. Perhaps someone will?
