State visit to Charles III

King Charles III and Queen Camilla received Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday with the official pomp befitting a state visit.

First visit since cancer diagnosis

The visit, which lasts three days, is the first the king has received since he was diagnosed with an unspecified cancer in January.

Prince William also present

The Japanese royal couple were welcomed by Prince William on 25th June, reports People. The heir to the throne accompanied them to Horse Guards Parade, where they received military honours.

Transported by carriage

Emperor Naruhito and King Charles III travelled in carriages different from those of their wives. Masako attracted attention for wearing a mask - to match her dress - to protect herself from her allergy to horses during their journey between Whitehall and the palace.

For his part, Prince William rode in a third carriage, alongside politician Hirofumi Nakasone, in front of the Japanese delegation.

No sign of the Princess of Wales

Although Kate Middleton made an appearance at the Trooping the Colour fashion show 10 days ago, she did not appear at the ceremony this time. She was not scheduled to make an appearance and her appearance at Trooping the Colour was not meant to be taken as a return to royal duties.

Private visits

The Japanese royal couple arrived in London last Sunday, but booked the first two days as private visits.

A long-awaited visit

Both Charles III and Emperor Naruhito share a passion for nature. According to El Mundo, their friendship goes back more than 20 years. The British king visited Japan five times and extended the invitation to the Japanese emperor.

Gala dinner

In the evening, they held a state banquet at Buckingham Palace, where the King and the Emperor delivered their respective speeches and the women wore a few sparkly items from the jewellery cupboards!

Despedida privada

Thursday, 27 June, will be the last day of the state visit, where the Emperor and Empress will visit an exhibition dedicated to manga at the Young V&A museum and then formally bid farewell to the British royal couple.
