Philip Baker Hall, the actor with the 'Basset-Hound look,' has died
John C. Reilly was the one who called Philip Baker Hall "the man with the Basset-Hound look." It may be one of the most striking nicknames in the history of Hollywood.
Philip Baker Hall passed away at the age of 90.
The actor died in Glendale, California, surrounded by his family, 'Variety' reports.
This extraordinary actor is one of those stars you've seen in hundreds of movies and series but whose name not everyone may remember.
And when we talk about hundreds, we are not exaggerating that much because, throughout his career, Philip Baker Hall accumulated up to 185 appearances in film and television.
It could have been more, because Philip Baker Hall started late in the world of acting. He was 39 years old when he made his debut in 1970 in 'Love-In '72'.
Over the course of the next 50 years, he was a skilled secondary actor. His last appearance was in the Netflix drama series 'Messiah' in 2020.
Philip Baker Hall did not just appear in 185 random series and films, but he managed to get parts in some of the best works of cinema and television in the last half century.
In cinema, Philip Baker Hall appeared in 'Hard Eight,' 'Boogie Nights,' 'The Truman Show,' 'Zodiac,' 'The Insider' (image), and 'Dogville,' among others.
In 'Magnolia' (1999) he played the unforgettable Jimmy Gator, which gave him the glory and respect of all of Hollywood.
However, he also made an impression in TV shows like 'Seinfeld,' 'Falcon Crest,' 'Miami Vice,' 'MASH,' 'Modern Family,' and 'Murder, She Wrote,' to name just a few examples.
The actor appeared in the 'Seinfeld' episode 'The Library' as Lieutenant Joe Bookman, the public library employee chasing a never-returned copy of Henry Miller's 'Tropic of Cancer.' He would be among the series' most memorable supporting characters.
"You better not sc*** up again, Seinfeld," was one of his memorable lines, "or I'll be all over you again like a pitbull on a poodle!"
Mr. Bookman would return to the series one more time, in its infamous 'Finale.'
Larry David, with whom he worked on both 'Seinfeld' and 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' says Philip Baker Hall made him "laugh louder than any other actor I've ever worked with."
The actor who played George in the series tweeted the following message about Philip Baker Hall:
"One of the highlights of our year on SEINFELD was sharing and benefitting from the enormous talents of our guests.
One of the giants who blessed us was the great Phillip Baker Hall who has left us 90 years of tremendous work.
Rest well, sir."
Others have added that Philip Baker Hall was one of those actors who leave their mark on each shoot and of whom no one will ever say a bad word.
In fact, many celebrities have said goodbye to Philip Baker Hall on social media showing their respect and admiration.
