2022 in photos: Glastonbury

The legendary festival in the English town of Glastonbury, which has been running for more than 50 years, took place in June 2022. 200,000 people saw classic stars perform, like Diana Ross, and younger celebrities like Billy Eilish and Kendrick Lamar.

Due to the pandemic, the festival was forced into a hiatus in 2020 and 2021. Thankfully, 2022 saw Glastonbury return as a red-letter day on our calendars.

Big names from different genres lent their talents to 31 special areas. The iconic Pyramid Stage is reserved for the headline acts, and there we will be able to enjoy Paul McCartney, Billie Eilish, and Kendrick Lamar.

As a former Beatle, McCartney has broken many records. At Glastonbury, he had a new one: the oldest headliner in the history of the event. The English singer was 80 years old when he took the stage.

If McCartney was the oldest headliner, pop sensation Billie Eilish set the record as the youngest headliner in Glastonbury's history.

The singer made her Glastonbury debut in 2019 (pictured), and she told the crowd that she would love to experience the festival as a normal festival-goer because everything looked so much fun.

Glastonbury marked Lamar's third headlining gig in 2022, and he was seen earlier in the year performing at the Super Bowl.

Apart from the headliners, other amazing singers and groups filled out the schedule, such as the award-winning Phoebe Bridgers.

Noel Gallagher, St. Vincent, Lorde, Diana Ross, Ziggy Marley, Pet Shop Boys, and Primal Scream were just some of the top acts at this year's Glastonbury.

The Sugababes performed on the Avalon Stage, continuing their much-rumoured and much-anticipated comeback. It had been years since the original trio performed together, and they were originally set to do so in 2020, which was their 20th anniversary.

The band hit their peak between 2002 and 2004, with a handful of number-1 singles and platinum-certified albums. Unfortunately, allegations of bullying and infighting derailed the band's success.

More pop nostalgia with TLC. The American group reunited in 2015 and played Glastonbury for the first time. They had only played the UK two times before.

TLC is the best-selling American girl group in history, with a staggering 65 million records sold worldwide. Their biggest legacy, however, is that they have been positive role models for other female ensembles. TLC proved that women could have agency in the music industry and sing about difficult subjects without compromising their sound.

Glastonbury is more than a music festival, and there is always a focus on charitable causes. Greenpeace, which has a long association with the festival, was present in 2022 to spread awareness about climate change.

Urine at Glastonbury usually gets a bad rap - traces of illegal substances have been found to contaminate the soil. Nevertheless, Glastonbury has often experimented with technology that converts this human waste into electricity.

The first Glastonbury was in 1970, and it is still going strong. The attendance at the inaugural event was a mere 1,500, and it was held the day after Jimi Hendrix died.
