ER: What happened to the cast of the famous series?

'ER' is one of those iconic shows that is still engrained in many people's minds. It lasted for 15 seasons and 331 episodes from 1994 to 2009.

The story is based on the real-life experience of the physician and writer Michael Crichton who, before selling his idea to Warner Bros and Amblin Television, had his novel 'Jurassic Park' made into a blockbuster by the hands of Steven Spielberg.

The show centered on the events and people working in the E.R., the Emergency Room, of the fictional Cook County General Hospital in Chicago. There, we were able to follow the lives and experiences of different doctors and nurses as well as the patients that were part of each episode.

The series was an incredible success and one of the longest-running medical shows in American tv history (after 'Grey's Anatomy'). 'ER' has the record of being the most nominated show in history with 124 Emmy nominations. The series took home 23 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series in 1996.

But the awards also rained on the cast who in total received 4 Screen Actors Guild awards. The 'ER' ensemble became internationally famous and was recognized around the globe. His character appeared in eight of the fifteen seasons of the show until he tragically dies of a brain tumor. He started out as the Chief Resident of the E.R. but would later be promoted to attending physician in the hospital. Dr. Greene was the leader of the group and the one to make the toughest medical decisions.

His performance as Dr. Greene granted him a Golden Globe in 2001 and several Emmy nominations. After the series, the actor has kept on working in many famous shows like 'Zero Hour' (2013), 'Law & Order: True Crime' (2017), and 'Designated Survivor' (2019).

In 2016, Edwards produced and directed the film 'My Dead Boyfriend' which got negative reviews. In 2022, the actor participated in more successful projects: the Netflix show 'Inventing Anna' and the Apple TV series 'WeCrashed.'

He was the handsome pediatrician of the E.R. who had many love affairs throughout the episodes. Dr. Ross finally settled down with the head nurse Carol Hathaway.

He is the most acclaimed actor that has come out of the 'ER' cast. Clooney left the show in season five after receiving many recognitions for his role as Dr. Ross. The actor won two Emmy awards for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series.

After the show, Clooney went on to appear in many successful movies like the Coen brothers' masterpiece 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' (2000) for which he received a Golden Globe for Best Actor, the 'Ocean's Eleven' franchise, and 'Syriana' (2005) for which the actor received his first Oscar award for Best Supporting Actor.

After starring in dozens of movies, the actor worked as a director and producer with much success. Clooney won his second Academy Award for Best Picture, but also a Golden Globe and a BAFTA, with the Ben Affleck-led movie 'Argo' in 2013. Later, in 2022, the actor directed the Amazon Prime movie 'The Tender Bar' which also starred Ben Affleck.

Susan Lewis was the best friend of Dr. Greene and a second-year resident at the beginning of the show. She had a lot of family-related problems that would push her to move out of Chicago and leave her position in the hospital.

Actress Sherry Stringfield left the show in the third season. However, she returned for the eighth season and reprised her role until the twelfth season of the series.

Like many of her other castmates, Sherry Stringfield received three Emmy nominations for her role in 'ER.' Yet, afterward, she never reached the same recognition with any other project. Stringfield has mainly worked in TV productions and had recurring roles in the series 'Under The Dome' (2014) and 'Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders' (2015-2016).

Carter was a third-year medical student who aspired to become a surgeon but ended up loving the work of an attending physician. As a resident, he was assigned to Dr. Peter Benton with whom he had many issues.

He was one of the few actors who appeared in both the first and the last seasons of the show. Wyle starred in the first eleven seasons and sporadically in the twelfth and fifteenth seasons. He played his role as Dr. Carter in 254 episodes, more than any other member of the cast.

Apart from 'ER,' the actor has starred in successful movies like 'A Few Good Men' (1992) and 'Donnie Darko' (2001). However, his career has focused more on TV productions. The actor is mainly known for his participation in 'Falling Skies' (2011-2015) and he has written, produced, and acted in TNT's show 'The Librarians' (2014-2018), the miniseries 'The Red Line' and the second season of  'Leverage: Redemption' (2023).

Peter Benton was a surgical resident who was determined to do whatever he could to demonstrate he was perfectly capable of becoming a surgeon.

The actor left the show after eight seasons but appeared in the show's last episode in season 15. After 'ER,' the actor starred in some episodes for series like 'Make it in America' and 'Under the Dome' (2015-2016), but he has mostly continued his work behind the cameras as a director and producer of shows like 'Chicago P.D.' and 'Law & Order.'

Carol Hathaway worked as a nurse manager at the E.R. She was so good at her job that she even passed the exam to become a doctor. In the end, however, Hathaway realized how valuable the job of a nurse was and she decided to remain in that position.

Her role as Carol Hathaway was one of the biggest of her career. It was awarded a Primetime Emmy. After the show, Margulies continued her work in television, starring in 'The Mists of Avalon' (2001) and some episodes of 'Scrubs' and 'The Sopranos'.

But the actress's most important role after 'ER' was the one of Alicia Florrick in the CBS series 'The Good Wife' (2009-2016). Margulies was the protagonist of the show for 7 seasons and won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, a Golden Globe Award, and a Television Critics Association Award. In 2021, she joined the cast of the Apple TV series 'The Morning Show'.

She was a medical student that would later become an E.R. Chief Resident. As a student, she had a bit of a rivalry with another medical student, John Carter.

The actress had a recurring role during the first season of the show but never appeared in the next seasons. However, her character returned in season 6 and became one of the protagonists of the series until she left again in season 11.

Apart from her role in the medical drama, Wen is known for voicing Mulan in the Disney movie. We have mostly been able to see the actress triumph in television in shows like 'Stargate Universe' (2009-2011), 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' (2013-2020), but also in the role of Hala the Accuser in the Marvel Universe and in the role of Fennec Shand in 'The Mandalorian' and 'The Book of Bobba Fett'.

She started as the physical therapist of Dr. Benton's mother but ended up working as an attending physician at the ER. Due to their close relationship, Boulet and Benton started having an affair.

Reuben began as a recurring character in the first season of the show but joined as part of the main cast from seasons 2 to 6. The actress received two Emmy nominations for her performance as Jeanine.

The actress continued her work in cinema as well as television. Gloria Reuben's most important role to date in cinema was Elizabeth Keckley in the Steven Spielberg movie 'Lincoln' (2012). In television, the actress has played major roles in shows like 'Mr. Robot' (2015-2019) and 'City on a Hill' (2019-2021). The actress is currently part of the third season of the CBS series 'The Equalizer'.

Although she started as Chief Resident of the ER, Dr. Weaver advanced in different positions in the hospital until she got promoted to Chief of Staff. Her professionalism and her administrative interests often made her clash with the rest of the team.

Along with Noah Wyle, Laura Innes was the member of the 'ER' cast with the most time in the series. She appeared in the second season and continued playing Dr. Weaver until the thirteenth season.

Although the actress has starred in some important projects in cinema ('Deep Impact'), and television ('The Event', 'Awake', 'How to Get Away with Murder'), Innes has also worked as an episode director of major TV shows like 'ER', 'Brothers & Sisters', 'House', 'Mr. Mercedes' and 'The West Wing', for which she received an Emmy nomination.

She was a British surgeon who specialized in trauma injuries. In the end, she became the Chief Surgeon of the unit. The actress appeared in seasons 4 to 11 of the show.

Alex Kingston has starred in small or recurring roles in series like 'Arrow' (2013-2016), 'Blue Bloods' (2016; 2021), 'Shoot the Messenger' (2016), and 'A Discovery of Witches' (2018-2022). In 2023, Kingston joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in London to star in the play 'The Tempest.'

He started out as an attending physician, but throughout the six seasons, he was promoted to Chief of Emergency Medicine. Unfortunately, in the tenth season of the series, Rocket died after a helicopter crashed into the hospital and killed him.

Apart from his work in 'ER,' McCrane has mostly had success in TV shows. He starred in '24' (2006-2007); in 'Harry's Law' (2011) as Josh Peyton for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award; 'All Rise' (2019-2021); and in 'The Offer' and 'The Terminal List', both in 2022.

He was a former Croatian soldier who moved to Chicago to work as an attending physician. There, he would meet Dr. Abby Lockhart who'd become the love of his life. The actor appeared in season six of the show and continued as one of the main characters until season 14.

Although his role in the 'ER' has been the most important one of his career, we could see the actor in other TV shows like 'Timeless' (2016-2018), 'Santa Clarita Diet' (2019), 'Dollface' (2019), and 'The Boys' (2020). In 2022, Visnjic starred in the Hulu horror movie 'Hellraiser.'

This third-year medical student would later become a doctor in the ER. From the beginning of her appearance in season six of the show, she maintained intense relationships with two of the main characters: Dr. Luka Kovač and Dr. John Carter. The actress starred in 9 seasons of the series.

The actress has appeared in a number of movies, for example opposite Steve Carell in 'Beautiful Boy' (2018). However, she has mainly earned fame for her work on television. Before 'ER,' we could see Tierney in 'News Radio' (1995-1996), and afterward, she would star in 'The Good Wife' (2012-2013), 'The Affair' (2014-2019) - for which she received a Golden Globe - and the 2022 productions 'Your Honor' and 'American Rust.'

Throughout the 15 seasons of 'ER,' many other great actors and actresses have come and gone: Shane West ('A Walk to Remember', 'Salem') as Ray Barnett, John Stamos ('Fuller House', 'Big Shot') as Tony Cates, and Angela Bassett ('American Horror Story', 'Black Panther') as Catherine Banfield, to name a few.
