Ukraine launches massive drone attack on Moscow

In the early hours of Wednesday, August 21, one of the largest drone attacks on Moscow in the war took place.

The Ukrainian drone offensive did not only take place in Moscow. According to the Russian defence ministry Ukraine launched 45 drones in total into Russian territory. In the Moscow area, 11 drones were shot down, but 23 drones were intercepted (according to Russian sources) in Bryansk, 6 in Belgorod, 3 in Kaluga and 2 in the Kursk region.

This is not the first time that Ukrainian drones have attacked Moscow (pictured, the effects of an attack in 2023). This time, no civilian casualties or significant damage were reported, according to Russian authorities.

According to Reuters, the drones were able to get as close as 38 kilometres from the Kremlin. But Russian anti-aircraft defences did their job.

According to CNN, it was Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin (pictured) who immediately spoke of "one of the largest drone attacks in history."

International press reports, citing Russian sources, report that the massive arrival of Russian drones could be clearly seen on the horizon on the outskirts of Moscow.

Targeting Moscow with drones is part of the Ukrainian psychological warfare strategy to make the Russian population believe that war can really reach their homes.

Zelensky changed the course of the war when he invaded Russian territory in Kursk, where Ukrainian troops are having great success. And attacks like this one by Moscow only serve to send the message that Ukraine is ready to fight by penetrating Russia without any qualms.

Drones are playing a decisive role in this war, especially for Ukraine. They are efficient as anti-aircraft defence and for carrying out attacks like the one in Moscow.

The attack on Moscow shows how drones can cross the Russian border and fly for miles towards the capital without being intercepted. This poses a threat to Putin.
