They planned to attack Cuba: how a 'terrorist plan' originating in the US was dismantled
The official newspaper of the Cuban government, Granma, has disclosed details of the alleged "terrorist plan" that the Cuban Ministry of the Interior claims to have neutralized after an investigation that began in December 2023. According to this source, the actions were coordinated from the United States by a group of Cubans settled there.
According to the Uol news portal, the investigation resulted in the arrest of Adenys García Álvarez, a Cuban who moved illegally to the United States in 2014, where he had lived since then.
The Ministry of the Interior affirms that García Álvarez is the main executor of the planned actions in US territory. The 40-year-old Cuban citizen emigrated to the United States after receiving sanctions for crimes of robbery with force and speculation, according to Granma.
The television program Razones de Cuba showed fragments of the detainee's statements. In them, García Álvarez claims to have contacted Willy González, representative of the group La Nueva Nación Cubana en Armas, and participated in military training in the United States.

As reported by the Diario de Cuba portal, which opposes the government, the statements were accompanied by images of shooting practices and the reading of a statement from La Nueva Nación Cubana en Armas. "We believe that the fastest way to achieve [the end of the dictatorship] is armed struggle," reads one of the members of the group classified by Cuba as paramilitary.

In late 2023, García Álvarez entered Cuba illegally using a jet ski, in possession of five weapons and ammunition. In Cuban territory, he recruited other people including his father, Rigoberto García Ávila, Granma reports.
Garcia Ávila also had his statements shown on the Razones de Cuba program. According to him, the group's objectives were to assault a military unit to take its weapons, obtain a farm to gather the recruits and a truck to transport people and weapons.
Diario de Cuba reports that García Álvarez can be punished for crimes such as illegal entry into the country, acts against State Security, crimes against the constitutional order and crimes associated with terrorism, according to the chief prosecutor of the Directorate of Confrontation with Corruption and Illegalities, Eduard Roberts.
In December 2023, Cuba published a National Terrorist List in accordance with Resolution 1373 of the United Nations Security Council. Most people and organizations are located in the United States. Willy González and La Nueva Nación Cubana en Armas are on the list.
According to Granma, Colonel Álvarez Valle wants to cooperate with the competent agencies in the United States. "Our country has maintained a transparent, serious, cooperative, responsible policy in confronting terrorism, and we will keep this willingness (...) to discover, confront and neutralize this type of activities," he declared.
