Orban's warning to Putin: 'The next few months will be much more brutal'
Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary has been on a peace mission, engaging in talks with both Zelensky and Putin. While this diplomatic approach has sparked controversy among EU leaders, it’s Orban’s announcement following the meetings that is truly shocking.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz strongly criticized Orban's action and made it clear that the Hungarian head of state does not speak for the EU. This point is necessary because Hungary currently holds the presidency of the EU Council.
However, Orban himself justifies his visits to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin by saying that he expects things to get worse on the front lines in the coming months.
Orban said that he had also been able to recognize this in his talks with the two presidents.
According to the Bild newspaper, Orban said: "I had the opportunity to speak to both the Ukrainian and Russian presidents. And believe me, the next two or three months will be much more brutal than we think."
It is therefore important to now switch from a policy of war to a policy of peace, said Orban.
On the one hand, the Hungarian head of state is concerned with saving human lives. And on the other hand, Europe's own interests are also decisive, "because what is happening here is very bad for us."
According to Reuters, Orban told reporters: "This war is also reflected in the destruction of our economic development and a decline in our competitiveness. In short, I told the president (Putin) that Europe needs peace."
According to the Bild newspaper, Orban does not take a position: "I do not argue about who is right and who is wrong. Because my goal is peace and a ceasefire."
Orban wants to hold talks not only with the Ukrainian and Russian presidents, but also with the other main players in the Ukraine war, namely the USA, the EU and China. It remains to be seen what the outcome of Orban's peace mission will be.
