Surprising find: Archaeologists uncover impressive collection of treasures in unusual location

In a highly unexpected archaeological excavation in Bulgaria, a remarkable series of discoveries emerged as archaeologists stumbled upon the burial site of an ancient warrior. The site was filled with treasures and artifacts from a bygone historical era.

Excavation at a site in the Topolograd village of Kapitan Petko Voyvoda began as part of a construction project aiming to build a solar panel park in the area according to a report cited by the Miami Herald, but it turned into something much more exciting.

Archeologists uncovered a 1,900-year-old grave belonging to a Thracian warrior and the burial site contained several of the incredible treasures buried alongside the soldier when they were laid to rest.

Among the treasures discovered were several golden artifacts, as well as multiple weapons and pottery, which were shown off by the Municipality of Topolovgrad on its Facebook page following the discovery.

One of the most impressive artifacts unearthed was a necklace the Miami Herald noted appeared to have a braided design with “several lantern-shaped pendants inset with red stones.”

A rectangular golden bracelet that had a similar design to the necklace was also discovered in the tomb. The bracelet had just as much detail inlaid across it as the necklace but looked far more intricate in its design.

The rear of the bracelet shows off the technical skill of the item’s maker. A very detailed border on the bracelet encloses an even more intricate and complex inlay of gemstones connected by various patterns.

A knife that appeared to have similar gemstones to the bracelet was also discovered in the tomb. However, there were also a few more mundane items uncovered in addition to the small treasure horde of golden jewelry.

Among the less exciting but still archeological remains were several pots, jars, and jugs, as well as the bones of the Thracian warrior who is believed to have been an aristocratic horseman employed by the Romans.

The ancient warrior was cremated following his death and was buried next to his horse, but the fact that the jewelry discovered in the grave appeared to be of a single set may indicate the warrior was an important figure.

Heritage Daily noted that the Thracians were an Indo-European people who emerged from the fog of history in the early Bronze Age. This group of ancient people came into conflict with the Romans during the Macedonian Wars.

The history of the Thracians is long and complicated but it is important to know that the Romans eventually made the Thracian tribes living in what is today modern Greece and Bulgaria into a client state before annexing their territory.

“Thracians often served in the Roman auxiliary forces as non-citizen troops, especially in cavalry and light infantry roles. After completing their term of service,” explained Mark Milligan of Heritage Daily.

“Thracian soldiers were settled in Roman colonies or granted land, further integrating into Roman society,” Milligan added. The warrior unearthed at Kapitan Petko Voyvoda could have been one of many Thracians integrated with Rome, but we may never know.

The excavations at Kapitan Petko Voyvoda were led by Daniela Agre, an archeologist at the Thracian Department of the National Archaeological Institute and a press release by the archeologists noted the many items they unearthed.

Among the impressive jewelry and knife were a gold diadem, several precious stones, a breastplate, and several weapons which were dated to the 1st Century AD. The motifs on some of the items have no other known examples from Bulgaria.
