Alex Jones and Trump are on the outs over a crazy conservative policy proposal
Former President Donald Trump and far-right commentator Alex Jones have had a very interesting alliance since Trump rose to political prominence but it seems their period of helpful collaboration might be over for Jones.
The Infowars host and generally very unhelpful conspiracy theorist turned on his former friend when Trump began distancing himself from Project 2025, which is a conservative policy proposal aimed at radically changing the U.S. government.
Project 2025 was developed by the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation and it has become an increasingly popular way for opponents of Trump to attack him and his campaign over the policies the project proposes.
Newsweek’s Alia Shoaib explained Project 2025 “outlines a plan to ensure Republican loyalists are in place at all levels of the federal government to implement conservative policies from the first days of a new Republican administration.”
“The 900-page document proposes reducing civil service roles, expanding presidential power, and staffing agencies with politically aligned appointees before implementing various conservative policies,” Shoaib added.
Some of the more radical policy proposals put forth by Project 2025 include completely eliminating the Department of Education, the implementation of very strict immigration policies, and a reduction in the scope of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
On July 5th, Trump claimed to know nothing about Project 2025 in a Social Media post on Truth Social, explaining that he had no idea who was behind the project and that he disagreed with some of what policies the project proposed.
“I know nothing about Project 2025. I have no idea who is behind it,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account before he added his particular online brand of written belligerence that he has become well known for spewing when angry.
“I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them,” Trump added.
The Guardian reported that one Republican called Trump’s disassociation from Project 2025 “preposterous” and highlighted the remarks of Olivia Toyne, a former White House advisor to Mike Pence, who outlined that Trump knew the proposals would hurt him.
“This is preposterous if you look at the collaborators and the authors of this plan,” Toyne told CNN when asked about the credibility of Trump’s denial according to the Guardian. “A lot of these people…served in Trump’s cabinet during his administration.”
“I think what this is telling us is that Donald Trump knows that what is written in this plan is so extreme that it is damaging to his possibility of getting elected, and that’s what he’s concerned about,” Toyne later added. It was a point Jones agreed with.
On the July 8th episode of Infowars, Jones went off on Trump for allowing himself to be misled by his advisors in regards to distancing himself from Project 2025 and the many policy objectives the proposal plans to make if Trump is reelected.
"Trump gets told by his advisers and people who really just don't want competition in his new White House … 'Oh God, these are radicals, sir. You've got to come out and distance yourself,'" Jones said.
"It's the Heritage Foundation, Trump. And again, Trump's really smart; he's got good instincts. He doesn't understand Republican machinery," Jones continued. Trump has yet to respond to Jones’ comments but his comeback might be a doozy if it ever happens.
Awareness and worry about Project 2025 has been growing in the public consciousness ever since The Heritage Foundation’s president Kevin Roberts said a second American revolution was coming while appearing on Steve Bannon’s podcast ‘War Room.’
"We are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be,” Roberts said, which may have prompted Trump’s disavowment of Project 2025 in the first place, though that cannot be verified.
