"Sticking their nose everywhere": how AMLO disarms Trump's former secretary of State
Recently, former US Secretary of State during the Trump administration, Mike Pompeo, outlined his views on the reforms promoted by Manuel López Obrador (pictured) in Mexico in an opinion column in The Wall Street Journal. As he has published on his X account, these measures are "a disaster for Mexico and bad for America."
According to Pompeo (pictured), the constitutional and political changes proposed by AMLO will upend bilateral relations between Mexico and the United States. For the former US Secretary of State, the result will be economic stagnation in Mexico, with chaos on the border and, possibly, a trade war. "Only the cartels will benefit," he said.

For Pompeo, the reform package also harms US exports of genetically modified corn and is based on "unscientific criteria." These measures "clearly violate USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) rules," Pompeo wrote in the aforementioned media.
The former Secretary of State affirms that the most troubling thing for foreign investors is the proposal that federal and local judges in Mexico, including the Supreme Court, be elected by popular vote. "That’s game over for judicial recourse in Mexico if a foreign investor has a dispute with a powerful political actor or interest," Pompeo said.
Mike Pompeo ends the article by calling for something to be done to change the course of the reforms: "The Mexican people, led by Ms. Sheinbaum, must step in now to change this course for their country, and the Biden administration must defend U.S. interests by helping them do so," added the former secretary.
In his morning conference on June 25, AMLO spoke about Mike Pompeo's comments regarding the reforms that the Mexican president wants to carry out: "We respect his point of view, we do not share it," said López Obrador, as reported by the El Universal newspaper.
For AMLO, the election in the United States in November is one of the reasons for Pompeo's comments: "We understand the circumstance of what is being experienced in the United States. So that all Mexicans have the information: there are going to be elections in November and there is the campaign. Every time there are elections, passions overflow,” said the Mexican.
According to El Universal, López Obrador also assured that the reform of the Judiciary “does not affect anything,” when questioned about the benefits that drug trafficking would have. He also added that Americans “are very bad used to sticking their noses in everywhere.”
For AMLO, these confrontations are not a personal issue: “Pompeo studied in a school where training has to do with seeking to resolve everything with the use of force, and I studied in a school where they taught me that human beings are not bad because nature, circumstances lead some to take the path of crime,” as reported in El Universal.
The Mexican president trusts that Mexico and the United States (Mexico's main trading partner) will continue to maintain a respectful and cooperative relationship. However, attentive to the upcoming elections, he called to follow the next debate between Donald Trump, once again a candidate for the US presidency, and Joe Biden, current US president.
