On May 1, 2022, KLAS-TV in Las Vegas reported that a barrel containing human remains was found by boaters, immersed in the mud of Nevada's Lake Mead.

Bones in a barrel

The police believe that the barrel may be from the 1980s based on the personal items inside the barrel. According to Lt. Ray Spencer from the Las Vegas Metro Police, it is believed that the individual inside the barrel was killed by a gunshot wound approximately 40 years ago.

Lt. Spencer's suspicions were correct, and on May 7, 2022, more human remains were found at Lake Mead. The Guardian reported that National Park Service rangers responded to a call that reported more human remains found in Callville Bay.

Two sisters who were out paddleboarding in Callville Bay, a popular area for water activities, discovered the remains. The Guardian reports that the siblings thought they had simply found the remains of a bighorn sheep.

In April 2022, water levels at Lake Mead were so low that a water valve that had not been visible since 1971 was exposed. The Southern Nevada Water Authority released a statement regarding the water levels at Lake Mead: "The Colorado River Basin is experiencing the worst drought in recorded history."

The LA Times reports that water districts have had to apply severe water use restrictions. Adel Hagekhalil, the district water manager for Southern California, said, "The ballpark figure we're looking at is getting to the consumption of about 80 gallons per person per day. We're trying to preserve everything we can."
