Promise: Increase the amount of PPE produced IN Canada

The PM's plan worked, and since implementing it more than 6,500 Canadian companies have aided with the production of PPE for Canadian hospitals. According to CTVnews, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada released a very encouraging statement on March 17th, 2021: "In many cases, what started off as retooling efforts to meet emergency needs have now become permanent lines of business to meet Canada's current and future healthcare requirements."

Promise: Increase wages of poorly paid essential front-line workers

In May of 2020, PM Trudeau made public an agreement with the provinces and territories to increase the wages of essential workers who weren't receiving a fair salary given the valuable services they were providing. Promise kept but...

While this was a fantastic initiative, the execution perhaps hasn't been perfect. Finance Canada stated in March of 2021 that $2.6 billion in funds had been provided to the provinces and territories via direct payments. However, Finance Canada, according to CTVnews, hasn't been able to confirm the number of employees that have seen an increase in wages. Each province or territory must decide who "deserves" a top-up and how much they will receive, as stated in an email from Benoit Mayrand to CTVnews.

Promise fulfilled!

Trudeau has held steady on his word regarding the promise of keeping the Canada/US border closed until safe despite international pressure. According to an interview with Justin Trudeau on March 12th of this year on 'CTV's Your Morning,' the Prime Minister doesn't have plans on opening the border any time soon. "We will listen to experts on when we can start easing restrictions, but the safety of Canadians needs to come first," said the PM.

Promise kept? Depends who you ask.

The minister of Intergovernmental Affairs insists that the first half of the two billion was transferred in the fall of 2020, and the second half was released in 2021. However, teachers and education advocates do not seem satisfied and are still raising concerns over classroom sizes and are asking for more federal investment in school for COVID safety purposes.

However, the app hasn't been accepted in all provinces and territories; Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, and Nunavut chose not to partake in the use of the app.

Promise kept? Well, its heading in the right direction

Perhaps Justin Trudeau was a little over-excited when he stated that Canada would be able to produce a vaccine for COVID-19. Well, the country certainly might do so, but considering production facilities and manufacturing centres first need to be BUILT, it most likely won't be happening any time soon. The money has been dished out, though, so it is just a question of patience.

Promise kept: but there are loopholes

The government controls travellers arriving by air heavily and ensuring they are quarantining in the stipulated matter. By March of 2021, 129 fines had been issued by the RCMP under the Quarantine Act. However, some travellers have found loopholes (which we won't go into detail about) to these measures. Let's just say if you cross the border by land (as a Canadian), the measures are much more relaxed.

Well done Mr. Trudeau!

We have looked at some, certainly not ALL, of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's promises to Canadians over the past year. Overall, we have to say that Trudeau has done a pretty excellent job of taking care of Canadians during this trying time. While he hasn't kept all of his promises as perfectly as he may have wished, we certainly applaud his efforts!
