Declassified Russian document show how the Kremlin is trying to pit Mexico against the U.S.

A recently declassified document reveals concerning information about Russia's interference in Mexico. This is pointed out by the opinion column Cuarto Poder, by the independent Mexican journalist Dolia Estévez, on the Eje Central portal.

The journalist claims that the U.S. government identified a Russian strategy to "stir up anti-Americanism, exploit the 'existential resentment' from the loss of half of its territory, and create a 'perception of threat'".

The goal? Increase the chances that Donald Trump (whom the document refers to as "our partner") is elected in the November 5, 2024 elections.

They also aim to create "Russophile and pro-Soviet policies" that are "assimilated by Mexican culture". This would be achieved, as Dolia Estévez states, "with the support of Morena and the participation of the Communist Party of Mexico and other 'patriotic groups' which she does not identify".

Already in the title of the document, revealed by Estévez, the Russian intentions are explicit: "A Mexican pass for Candidate A — proxy participation project in the November 2024 campaign." Here, "Candidate A" is Donald Trump, whom the document explains could benefit from an increase in tensions between Mexico and the United States.

The document also classifies Morena as a party "similar to United Russia", Putin's party. Estévez emphasizes that the Russians consider it a malleable and manipulable party, with “anti-American tendencies, promoters of de-dollarization, and an economic reorientation” within its ranks.

In its last sentence, the document, prepared by the Social Design Society (DSA), a company belonging to the Kremlin-financed propaganda conglomerate called Döppelganger, declares: "The time has come for the United States to feel that it is under the threat of a country of 130 million inhabitants that is finally awakening".

According to the Spanish newspaper El Periódico, the strategy detailed in the document is consistent with recent statements by high-level Kremlin political officials and with concrete facts, such as the significant presence of Russian diplomats in Mexico City.

A report by NBC News indicates that this high number of Russian diplomats in Mexico concerns the United States, which believes that this aims to strengthen the Kremlin's intelligence operations directed at the United States, as well as their propaganda efforts to undermine Washington and Ukraine.

It is worth remembering that, just under two months before assuming presidency, Claudia Sheinbaum sent an invitation to Vladimir Putin for her inauguration. Amid the commotion caused by the act, Sheinbaum stated that this was not a "formal invitation" but a "diplomatic note" sent to all countries with which Mexico maintains a bilateral relationship. Ultimately, Putin did not attend the ceremony.
