Bella Hadid for Palestine

It is not the first time that Bella Hadid and her sister Gigi have positioned themselves in favor of the Palestinian cause. Their family roots are in Palestine, which caused Bella to join the protests on the streets of New York against Israel's military offensive on Gaza. What do Hollywood stars and other celebrities think about this conflict?

Gal Gadot is with Israel

Just as Bella Hadid exhibits fidelity to her roots, so does Gal Gadot, albeit with nuances. Born in Tel Aviv and crowned Miss Israel in 2004, Wonder Woman posted a tweet with a broken-heart emoticon and a controversial text.

"I pray for the victims and their families"

"My heart breaks. My country is at war. I worry for my family, my friends. I worry for my people. This is a vicious cycle that has been going on for far too long. I pray for the victims and their families. I pray for this unimaginable hostility to end, I pray for our leaders to find the solution so we could live side by side in peace. I pray for better days."

Both pro-Israel and anti-Semitic

Some have found this tweet too vague, not enthusiastic enough for Israel, and even anti-Semitic! Others have accused her of ignoring the power difference between the Israeli army and the population of Gaza. Either way, to give an opinion on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is to penetrate a complex minefield.

Rihanna also in the middle

Rihanna is another celebrity who has been criticized for being too much in the middle. Through Instagram, the artist made a call to break the cycle of violence but, at the same time, she spoke of "notions perpetuated by government and extremists", which indicates that she sees both sides as having the same power position. Defenders of the Palestinian cause have since reminded Rihanna that the parties are very unbalanced (in favor of Israel) in this complex conflict.

Mark Ruffalo in solidarity with the Palestinian people

There is no both-sides-ism in the case of Mark Ruffalo, whose Twitter profile contains numerous expressions of support for the Palestinian cause. He has even called for sanctions on Israel such as those imposed on South Africa during apartheid. Apart from this, he has made it clear in some of his retweets that anti-Semitic positions in defence of peace in Palestine are not welcome.

Susan Sarandon

Naturally, the voice of leftist actress Susan Sarandon is heard supporting the cause of the Palestinian people. The actress has represented the most irreducible left of Hollywood for years.

In the music world, young American artist Tinashe was blunt and concise in tweeting #FreePalestine in the midst of this crisis.

The confusion of a boxer

British boxer Tyson Fury seems to contradict himself. There's a contrast between one of his recent messages and an old one about the Arab-Israeli conflict. It's caused his followers to make sarcastic jokes.

In favor of Palestine or Israel?

One day he displays the Palestinian flag, the other he launches a "pray for Israel" tweet. He does not seem to have very clear ideas on the matter.

Roger Waters, eternal defender of the revolution

Here's another classic defender of world revolutionary causes: Roger Waters, founder of Pink Floyd. He's against colonialism and a staunch pro-Palestinian, along the lines of a British left that had Jeremy Corbyn as its fundamental prophet.

Zayn Malik: no surprise

Zayn Malik, Gigi Hadid's partner and father of her daughter, has also expressed his solidarity with the Palestinian civilian population through social media. It's logical, his wife is Palestinian.

Palestine has the hearts of most celebrities, but...

If we do a survey among celebrities, the Palestinian cause gets more support. However, what really makes the most difference is the stance of the U.S. government on the issue. Its support for Israel is important for the outcome of the crisis. And what does the government say?

Joe Biden supports Israel

The U.S. government, with Joe Biden forcefully explicit, supports Israel. It's a strategic ally whom they do not criticize.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the critical voice of the Democrats

Within the Democratic Party, the dissenting voice of the young Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has already been raised. She drafted a manifesto with 25 congressmen calling for “diplomatic pressure” to stop the expulsion of Palestinians from East Jerusalem, which was the source of the escalation of violence in Gaza. In addition, Ocasio-Cortez insists that Israel be required to respect human rights.

An endless conflict

And so continues the conflict, between celebrities and U.S. politicians, but most of all between Israel and Palestine. After years of UN resolution violations, deadlocks, and violence, there are now massive bombings and desolation in the country once again.
