Will they keep playing festivals and concerts?

The band has a full concert schedule ahead, but Metallica's vocalist James Hetfield may decide to cancel gigs if festivals and concert venues impose COVID-19 regulations. He's one among a group of celebrities who disagree with strict vaccination requirements or dismiss the coronavirus vaccine altogether.

James Hetfield: weary of COVID stamp requirement

James Hetfield has expressed his concerns about the COVID vaccine in statements like the following [via Blabbermouth]: "I'm a little sceptical of getting the vaccine, but it seems to be rolling out and people are getting it and I've got lots of friends that have done it — I'm not totally sure about it. But I hope it doesn't come to a point where you have to have that COVID stamp in your passport or something to go everywhere. But if it comes down to that, then I'll make a decision then."

Louder than Life: "all attendees required to show proof"

The time to make his decision has now arrived. The band's first stop, the Louder than Life festival in Louisville, recently announced that, "to protect the health of fans, artists, staff and crew, all attendees will be required to show proof of either full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test." The text came from a press release by the festival's parent company Danny Wimmer Presents, via Courier Journal.

Will Metallica still play?

We'll have to see if James Hetfield is okay with the festival requiring vaccination for everyone on the terrain.

Other stars, though, have already put their foot down and simply refuse to go.

Eric Clapton is not playing if the jab is required

Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton has spoken up about venues asking for vaccine passports on entry. In fact, he is outright refusing to play concerts at these venues. His reasoning? He experienced a "severe" reaction to the AstraZeneca vaccine and doesn't think it should be a criteria.

Antivax

Eric Clapton has been vocally anti-vaccine. His reputation had already been scarred by his denialist statements during the pandemic, and now his refusal to perform in venues that require the vaccine will surely limit his options.

Against discrimination of unvaccinated people

In his statement about the matter, Clapton referred to the value of equal access and inclusion for unvaccinated people. "I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present," he said. "Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show."

Offspring drummer Pete Parada could not comply with mandates

Pete Parada, drummer of Offspring, saw himself forced to leave the band because he would not get a second dose of the vaccine. He wrote on Instagram that he's "unable to comply with what is increasingly becoming an industry mandate," namely being vaccinated to enter a concert hall or club.

"It has been decided that I am unsafe to be around"

As he did not get the second dose of the vaccine, "it has recently been decided that I am unsafe to be around, in the studio and on tour." It was a heart-breaking post in which the drummer seemed to express (indirectly) some bitterness on behalf of people who are 'getting left behind right now.'

The musician suffers from Guillain-Barré syndrome

The musician said he suffered Guillain-Barré syndrome, where a person's immune system damages their nerves. He explained that the condition had worsened after the first vaccine and he wasn't willing - nor would doctors suggest - to go through a second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Too risky to get the second jab

He said of COVID, "I caught the virus over a year ago, it was mild for me - so I am confident I'd be able to handle it again, but I'm not so certain I'd survive another post-vaccination round of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which dates back to my childhood and has evolved to be progressively worse over my lifetime. Unfortunately for me, (and my family - who is hoping to keep me around a bit longer) the risks far outweigh the benefits."

Misses a tour

Parada, who has been a member of The Offspring since 2007, wrote all this in a lengthy post on social media -stating categorically that he has no hard feelings towards his band. It is uncertain whether he will be playing with them again in the future, after missing their US tour that started in August.

Not just about Pete

Pete made it clear in his post that he wasn't just talking about himself individually, but rather in a bigger picture. The growing need to be vaccinated today has a negative impact on those who are medically unable to be vaccinated or those who simply want to have the freedom to refuse. He received countless messages of support on the social media site.

Other antivaxxers among musicians and actors

Stone Roses singer Ian Brown has made his opinion public about the dangers of the vaccination side-effects. He has promoted conspiracy theories and explained his actions were due to having "a family member whose health was destroyed by [previous] vaccinations".

While Deuce Bigalow makes his anti-vax statements on Twitter, cases in the US have been rising over the summer. Especially in Florida, Texas, and Schneider's home state, California.

MIA: against all vaccines

The rapper posted on Twitter that if she had to choose between a vaccine or a chip, she would prefer death. In another post, she said that most of science is linked to business, and that the best thing to do against the coronavirus is prevention. Finally, the artist claimed that she regretted having vaccinated her son, who is currently 11 years old.

Kanye West

Kanye West is known for his unconventional ideas, and he hasn't made an exception when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic. Believing that there are evil forces behind the vaccine, he called it "the mark of the beast" and said it was a way to "put chips inside us".

Jim Carrey: a long-time antivaxxer

A long-time supporter of the anti-vaccination movement, the actor has spread the false theory that vaccines cause autism. He's been more discreet when it comes to COVID-19.

In January 2021, when Larry King passed away, he tweeted: "We lost someone very precious to the virus today. Let’s do everything we can to keep each other safe." He did not mention the vaccine, though.

A sad story from the UK: rapper Marcus Birks dies regretting antivax stance

English rapper Marcus Birks contracted COVID-19 in early August 2021 and died on the 27th. The 40-year-old musician had made dismissive statements about the pandemic and vaccination before he fell ill. Among other things, he said that he did not need the jab because he was a healthy, strong man who played sports and had a balanced diet.

Changed his mind when ill

When he was suffering from COVID-19 in the hospital, Birks had a change of heart. He told the BBC that he'd been 'silly' for believing in inaccurate information and conspiracy theories: "If you haven’t been ill, you don’t think you’re going to get ill, so you listen to the [antivax] stuff."

The rapper left behind his pregnant wife Lis, who was also his band mate in the group Cappella.

Leticia Wright: no vaccine

Despite such stories, there will still be celebrities weary of getting the vaccine. Actress Leticia Wright, for example. The young 'Black Panther' star revealed in December 2020 that she wasn't going to get the vaccine. She shared a video on Instagram with statements about the effects of the vaccine by a pseudo-scholar.

Jenny McCarthy

McCarthy is one of Hollywood’s best-known anti-vaxxers and has not been silent about her views. The actress’s son, who has autism, believes that vaccines could be behind his condition. However, Jenny McCarthy doesn’t consider herself to be “anti-vaccine” as she told PBS Frontline, “We’re not an anti-vaccine movement. We’re pro-safe-vaccine schedule.” Regardless, it is unlikely that she'll be scheduling an appointment for the COVID vaccine any time soon.

Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro is also unlikely to get vaccinated, although he may change his mind at some point. The actor suspects vaccines caused his son to be autistic and he has actively promoted antivax speakers and movies like 'Vaxxed.' Since he is in a risk group due to his age (78), it's probably best for De Niro to keep his mask on at all times.

No Met gala if you don't have the vaccine

New York has put restrictions in place, becoming the first major US city to require proof of vaccination for people attending concerts and other indoor venues. Not only that, but both the Met Gala and Sundance Film Festival have said they would require attendees to have had the COVID vaccine.

Fewer places accessible for the unvaccinated

It seems, in short, that more and more venues and events are putting restrictions in place for those who have not been vaccinated.
