Prime time bout

The 2024 fight schedule culminated with a highly anticipated matchup between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury in December.

King of the Heavyweights

Usyk is again the king of the heavyweights after defeating Fury for a second time to remain the undisputed champion in the heavyweight division.

Overcoming the disadvantage

Usyk again had to find a way to overcome Fury's height, reach, and weight advantage, as Fury was 55 lbs heavier and five inches taller than the Ukrainian. However, Usyk has mastered his timing and foot movement to overcome anyone.

Dumbfounded

The fight was a blockbuster for 12 rounds, with either fighter looking like it could be their night to become champion. Despite that, Usyk won by a sizeable unanimous margin of 116-112, leaving some experts dumbfounded by the decision.

The judges

USA's Patrick Morley, Panama's Ignacio Robles, and Puerto Rico's Gerardo Martinez were the three judges at ringside and didn't award Fury a round after the fifth, per BBC.

Unanimous rounds

The judges were unanimous on rounds four, five, six, seven, eight, 10, and 11 but split for the other rounds, with Fury taking two rounds unanimously and Usyk taking five rounds.

Vast disparity

The vast disparity between the unanimous rounds left Fury, his promoter Frank Warren, and fans questioning whether the three judges judged the fight fairly.

“I thought I won the fight”

According to Sky Sports, Fury said: "I thought I won the fight again; I was Larry Holmesed again. I was on the front foot the entire time. When you don't get the knockout, this is what can happen." He added: "I swear to God, I thought I won by three rounds!"

"It's impossible"

Frank Warren went on a massive rant after the fight, saying: "How can Tyson only get four rounds in this fight? It's impossible. He got four rounds; each judge gave him four, all different rounds."

"He's very disappointed"

"He's very disappointed, as I am as well. But I mean, I'm not saying there's any bias [but] everybody along the front row there, we all thought is the same."

“All you want is a level playing field”

"I know what Tyson went through, what he did for this fight, and I know Usyk had done the same thing. All you want is a level playing field and a fair crack all the way, and that scoring was not good at all."

Fan reaction

According to X, one fan wrote: "Fury won the fight by a point. Never by four points in favour of Usyk! Rigged!" Another said: "Rigged, it should've been a draw, Fury had Usyk running around scared."

Usyk deserved the win

Fury, his team, and some fans agree that the Englishman deserved the win or at least a draw, but the fight statistics prove that Usyk had the better-quality shots and landed the biggest blows.

Punch stats

According to the Daily Mail, the punch stats revealed that Fury threw more punches (509) than Usyk (423) during the 12 rounds, but Fury only landed 144 compared to Usyk's 179.

Only 28%

The stats also showed that Usyk landed more punches than Fury in 10 of the 12 rounds, with Fury landing more in only one round. Usyk landed 42% of his punches, compared to Fury's 28%.

Earning his win

The BBC reports that Usyk landed 106 power punches to Fury's 100. Based on the stats, Usyk was the more dominant fighter, landing more frequently and with more power, subsequently earning the victory.

What should he do next?

With Usyk up 2-0, does Fury deserve another shot in a trilogy event, or should Usyk fight Daniel Dubois in a rematch? Whatever happens, Usyk deserves to stay unbeaten after two dominant wins over Fury.
