Embarrassment for United

After picking up their first trophy of the year, Manchester United was quickly humbled by their biggest rivals Liverpool, losing 7-0 to The Reds in a Premier League thriller.

Raising the question

The result is Liverpool's biggest win over United, and it's raised the question as to whether the Liverpool of just last year is back at their best.

A heated rivalry

The game between the two North-West giants has produced some of the most season-defining games over the years.

Liverpool's best

Let's look through some of Liverpool's biggest wins over their arch-enemy!

1983 League Cup Final

Nearly 100,000 fans crammed into Wembley stadium to watch Liverpool take on Manchester United in the 1983 League Cup Final in Bob Paisley's last season in charge of Liverpool.

Winning in extra time

After Norman Whiteside's early goal for United, Liverpool staged a late comeback with Alan Kennedy scoring to take the match to extra time, and then Ronnie Whelan curled an excellent strike home, sealing Liverpool's third consecutive League Cup.

Ending the losing streak in 2000

In 2000, Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United team had been one of the best, if not the best team in the world for several years by the time Liverpool faced them in the same year.

One goal in it

Danny Murphy's curling free kick was enough on the day to end Liverpool's ten-game losing streak in North-West derbies. However, it didn't stop United from winning their seventh Premier League title.

Away win in 2009

In a team that boasted Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, and Nemanja Vidic, Liverpool made easy work of dismantling United in 2009, winning 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Torres and Gerrard

Ronaldo scored the first goal of the game, but finishes from Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard got the ball rolling for the reds, with Andrea Dossena and Fabio Aurelio adding the finishing touches in a magical display.

The mauling of Old Trafford in 2021

It would take over ten years for Liverpool to emulate a similar performance to the one they showed in 2009, but in 2021 they got it and then some.

A massacre

Liverpool beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United team 5-0 away at Old Trafford in a game where Mohammed Salah became the first opposition player to score a Premier League hattrick at Old Trafford. The game was won by halftime, winning 4-0 at the interval.

Marching to the title in 2020

Maybe not the most humiliating performance inflicted by Liverpool. However, their 2-0 win over Manchester United in 2020 was a strong performance that almost guaranteed their first-ever Premier League title.

Securing the league

Goals from Virgil Van Dijk and Mo Salah gave Liverpool a 16-point lead at the top of the Premier League table at the time, and it continued their impressive streak of 21 wins from 22 games.

Biggest win against United

Their most impressive victory over the 'Red Devils' was last weekend's 7-0 mauling. The win was Liverpool's biggest-ever win over United in the teams' head-to-head history.

Second half show

Goals from front three Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Mo Salah, including a goal from hero Roberto Firmino secured a historic victory for Liverpool over their enemy.
