Breaking the law?

The 16-year-old Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal could risk breaking a German law if he is to play in Spain's final group game against Albania.

Key component

The Barcelona winger has been a key component to Spain's success at Euro 2024 so far, helping his side win two games from two against Croatia and Italy.

Paying a fine

For Yamal to help Spain win three out of three, The Sun reports his country could risk having to pay a £25,000 (€30,000, $31,600) fine if he is to play or continue his professional duties after 11 pm.

The law

According to Diaro AS, under German law, 16-year-olds are not permitted to work past 8 pm, but athletes have been given a special exemption to work until 11 pm.

9 pm start

With games starting at 9 pm local time, the earliest the match will finish is 11 pm, and that is not taking into consideration all the post-match duties that players are required to do.

Taken off against Italy

In Spain's last game against Italy, which started at 9 pm, the teenage sensation was taken off in the 71st minute, giving him plenty of time to finish his professional duties before the 11 pm curfew.

Extra time and penalties

The Sun reports that it could get even trickier for Spain when they reach the knockout rounds, with extra-time and penalties potentially taking a game past midnight.

A fine is not likely

Luckily for Spain, the threat of a fine is unlikely to be enforced, with the law being there to protect the well-being of youngsters and stop them from being exploited.

Flourishing

Rather than being exploited, Yamal has flourished for Spain so far in the tournament, providing one assist, 11 key passes into dangerous areas, and 16 attacking runs into the opposition's danger zone, the Euro 2024 app reports.

A unique tournament

The Spanish winger is performing superbly while still completing his homework from school in the off-time between training and games. It's certainly a unique tournament for the teenage wonderkid.
