NFL Training Camp: Which rookies are impressing?

At the time of writing, we are just 36 days away from the start of the NFL season, making this the perfect time to check in on how various rookies are getting on at their first ever NFL training camps.

Quinyon Mitchell was the first cornerback taken in the draft, with the Eagles hoping he will turn into a shutdown corner in time. Reports from Jeff Kerr for CBS Sports are so far positive, with the former Toledo Rocket “displaying blanket coverage,” while going up against AJ Brown. If he can cover Brown, he can just about cover anyone.

The forgotten wide receiver on the Washington Huskies last season, McMillan is drawing plenty of praise from his QB Baker Mayfield. The Bucs’ signal caller told NFL Network, “What people don't realize, he was their leading guy in '22 before he got hurt. And so, for him to get back to true form -- he's a stud.” A dynamic playmaker would go a long way to helping the Bucs win the NFC South.

Booker may not be a name everyone is familiar with as he was a fifth round selection by the Bears and overshadowed by his new team selecting Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze in round one. Still, Booker is garnering praise from reporters watching the Bears training camp, with Adam Jahns of The Athletic writing he is, “starting to notice his pass rush a lot more with the pads now on.” One to keep an eye on.

We will admit we weren’t overly high on Daniels during the pre-draft process, but, as ever, we wish nothing but the best for every player in their career. With that being said, we may be forced to eat our words as Daniels has been impressing at the Commanders’ camp, with Zachary Pereles for CBS Sports noting he had, “plenty of good moments,” during a pass-heavy period of practice.

Harrison becoming a legit number one receiver in the NFL has felt inevitable for some time, with the former Buckeye destined to dominate in the pros. Kyler Murray has been effusive in his praise for the rookie, telling Sports Illustrated, “I have no doubt he'll go and do his thing this year and win whenever he wants to.”

The fastest man ever at the NFL combine has ended up with the back-to-back defending Super Bowl champs and is showing out in KC. Justin Churchill for AtoZ Sports writes, “Xavier Worthy is continuing to make insane plays look effortless at training camp,” which should probably concern the rest of the AFC West and the NFL.

Another Eagles rookie, this time third round selection Jalyx Hunt out of Houston Christian. Hunt was expected to be a longterm developmental prospect for Philly, but according to Martin Frank of the Delaware News Journal, “Hunt has shown his speed in rushing the quarterback as well as dropping into coverage,” with other reporters noting his talent has been shining through.

When you are such an impressive wide receiver prospect you are being described as 1b to Marvin Harrison Jr’s 1a, you will probably be making plays early and often in your NFL career. That is the level of expectation in Nabers in NYC, and so far he is delivering per Connor Hughes of SNYtv, who noted his, “really, really impressive ability to separate,” now, about the QB…

Fuaga was one of a number of impressive offensive line prospects in the 2024 draft, and so far, he has been living up to the billing. That is, at least, according to Saints center Erik McCoy who told reporters, “I will say this, for as long as I've been here, he's the best rookie offensive lineman I've seen. As far as his mental, physical [ability], I can tell he's a freakin' dog.”
