Former US Open Champion Gary Woodland undergoes brain surgery
Former US Open champion Gary Woodland, 39, has had successful surgery to remove a brain tumor.
Woodland underwent the surgery on Monday, September 18th.
Doctors discovered the lesion on his brain earlier this year, Woodland revealed the diagnosis in August.
Upon receiving his diagnosis, Woodland tried a non-surgical approach, taking medication with the aim of reducing the size of the tumor.
Per BBC Sport, Woodland discussed with his family and specialists his best next steps once medication didn’t stop the tumor’s growth. They decided surgery was the best option.
Woodland and his team released a statement on social media announcing the surgery had gone well and the surgeons had removed a “majority of the tumor”.
Woodland’s statement continues, saying, “At this time, the family requests space and privacy to be together. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers as he gets started on the road to recovery.”
If everything goes as expected, the 2019 US Open champion will be back on the golf course in due time.
