These athletes tragically passed away in May 2024

May 2024 saw us say goodbye to several great sportspeople. These athletes passed away last month.

Young Australian surfers Callum Robinson and Jake Robinson, and American Jack Carter Rhoad were murdered while surfing in North America. After investigation, it turned out that they had been victims of a robbery that ended in tragedy. The event shocked the world.

Former NBA player and one of the greatest basketball talents the world has ever seen, Bill Walton, died of cancer at the age of 71. In recent years, he was a prominent sports commentator.

American golf champion Grayson Murray was found dead at the age of 30. He was participating in a tournament and, according to sources close to the athlete, might have taken his own life.

American UFC fighter Geane Herrera (UFC) died on 18 May in a motorbike accident in Tampa, Florida. He was 33 years old.

A former University of Connecticut and Cal State Northbridge player, Rakim Lubin was 28 years old when he died. Lubin played for the UConn Huskies during the 2014-2015 season.

On 9 May 2024, Australian football player Cameron McCarthy, 29, was found dead at a property at Lake Coogee.

Two-time European weightlifting champion and Rio 2016 Olympian, Oleksandr Pielieshenko, joined the army shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of his country. His death adds to the long list of Ukrainian soldiers killed in action.

Known as 'El Flaco' (the 'Slim One'), César Luis Menotti was one of the most important figures in Argentine football. He died on 5 May of severe anaemia.
