Competitive relationships

Professional sportspeople are usually the most competitive people in any room they’re in, so perhaps it’s no surprise when two meet they feel like they may have met a kindred spirit. Let’s take a look at some of the true power couples in sports history.

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf

With 30 Grand Slams between them, there’s certainly no lacking in talent between these two tennis legends, although Graf surely holds the upper hand out-slamming her husband 22 to eight.

Lindsey Vonn and Tiger Woods

Arguably the two best at their chosen professions, Woods and Vonn dominated in golf and downhill skiing respectively. They dated for over three years, but for that time they were certainly a sporting power couple.

Kim Clijsters and Lleyton Hewitt

Another tennis couple, albeit a slightly less successful one than Agassi and Graf. Clijsters and Hewitt won slams in both singles and doubles and were amongst the best in the world during the early 2000s.

Chris Evert and Greg Norman

‘The Shark’ and Evert were married for just over a year in the late 2000s, but both are firmly entrenched in sporting royalty. Norman was one of the best golfers of his day and Evert won an astonishing 18 Grand Slams during her career.

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy

Another tennis-golf hybrid couple, with Wozniacki and McIlroy dating for multiple years and eventually getting engaged before the Northern Irishman called things off. It did spawn one of the worst portmanteau nicknames of all time in WozIlroy, however.

Sanya Richards-Ross and Aaron Ross

Richards-Ross was one of America’s greatest ever 400m runners, winning Olympic golds in both individual and relay races. Aaron Ross won two Super Bowls as a defensive back for the New York Giants. An incredibly talented pair.

Nat Sciver and Katherine Brunt

Before their wedding, Nat Sciver and Katherine Brunt were two of the very best women’s cricketers in the world. Brunt confessed her love for Sciver on the balcony at the famous Lord’s cricket ground after England had just won the World Cup against India, quite the moment.

Nomar Garciaparra and Mia Hamm

A six-time All-Star and Red Sox Hall-of-Famer and probably the best women’s soccer player of all time make quite the pairing. The two have been married since 2003.

Zach Ertz and Julie Johnston

Both members of sports teams at Stanford, Zach and Julie met through mutual friends in 2012. Since then Julie has won two World Cups and Zach scored the winning touchdown for the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 52.

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe

Rapinoe is a two time World Cup winner and Sue Bird won seemingly everything there is to win in women’s basketball including four WNBA title and five Olympic golds. Some serious accomplishments here.

Lauren Cheney and Jrue Holiday

Lauren is a multi-time Olympic champion in soccer and Jrue is into his 14th year in the NBA having picked up a title back in 2021. Between they certainly have a lot of trophies to store.

Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens

Biles is own of America’s greatest ever gymnasts who dominated the competition on her way to seven Olympic golds. Owens is a very solid safety who recently signed for the Green Bay Packers in the NFL. They actually met when one slid into the other’s DMs on instagram!

Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella

Insert clever joke about Daniel's famous chant being a precursor to asking Brie Bella to marry him, both saying ‘Yes’, here. Anyway, these two pro wrestlers have been married since 2014 and have two children together.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ana Ivanovic

The legendary German midfielder who won a World Cup in 2014 and the form world number one have been together since 2014 and married two years later.

J. J. Watt and Kealia Ohai

The recently retired Watt has been in a relationship with Ohai since 2016 and recently welcomed their first child into the family. J.J. was possibly the best defensive player in the NFL during his prime and is heading to the Hall of Fame. Kealia played well over 100 games in the National Women's Soccer League and made three appearances for the USWNT.
