City win, Haaland scores

Erling Haaland scored the third and final goal of Manchester City's crushing win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Another record

The Norwegian's volley late in the second half was his 45th goal in 39 games for Manchester City this season, breaking the record for goals scored by a Premier League player in a single season.

'He is just a master'

According to BBC Sport, former Bayern Munich and Germany striker, Mario Gomez said: Every team has to fear this player because he is just a monster. He is a beast, congratulations to Manchester City for signing him."

The perfect poacher

Of the 45 goals Haaland has scored this season, 44 have been inside the box, including six penalties and six hattricks.

'Great for wide players'

After speaking on BT Sport, former City defender Joleon Lescott said, "It must be great for the wide players knowing you can put it in an area, and Haaland will connect."

The record

Since the inaugural season of the Premier League in 1992-1993, no player has scored 45 goals in a single season until Haaland yesterday.

Who scored 44?

Ruud Van Nistelrooy in 2002-03 and Mohamed Salah in 2017-18 both scored 44 goals in 52 games for Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

Ruud’s 02-03 campaign

Van Nistelrooy scored 25 goals in 34 appearances in the Premier League season, including three hattricks. He scored 12 Champions League goals in nine appearances, with five goals in domestic cups.

After more

Haaland's goal against Bayern Munich was his 11th of the Champions League campaign, putting him one goal behind Van Nistelrooy, whose 12 goals in 02-03 is still the record for a Premier League side.

Salah’s 17-18 campaign

Mo Salah's impressive 2017-2018 campaign saw him score 32 goals in 36 games in the Premier League, including four goals in a 5-0 win against Watford. The Egyptian produced ten goals in 13 matches in the Champions League, taking Liverpool to the final.

Trophies to win, records to destroy.

City is still in the running to win the treble, with nine games left in the Premier League and potential finals in the FA Cup and Champions League, Haaland will still have 15 games remaining for the season.

Record for goals in a Premier League season

The Norwegian striker sits on 30 goals in the Premier League this season, becoming only one of 12 players to break that barrier. The record to beat is 34, set by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer in a 42-game Premier League season.

Beating Salah

Mo Salah's 32 goals in a 38-game Premier League season is the record for that number of games. Haaland has nine games to break to 32 and 34-goal campaigns.

The impossible task

Despite the fact Erling Haaland is goal scoring machine, there is one record he is very unlikely to achieve. Dixie Dean scored 63 goals in all competitions for Everton in the 1927-28 season.

The games to do it

Haaland would need to score 19 goals in the potential 15 games he has remained to break a record that has never been close to being broken.

The future

At just 22 years old, the Manchester City star has his best years ahead of him, meaning maybe one day he could break the 63-goal record in the future.
