Farewell to a legend! Marco Reus' final game for Dortmund is the Champions League final

The Champions League final against Real Madrid will be Marco Reus' last game for Borussia Dortmund. The German midfielder will be hoping to bid farewell in style after an unforgettable spell at the Signal Iduna Park.

According to Planet Sport, Reus said: "Playing for a club for 12 years, it has to mean something. You don't stay just because of the name or the money. You need to feel comfortable, have a good environment, and have great team-mates."

Borussia Dortmund defied all odds in the UEFA Champions League semi-final, defeating PSG 1-0 in both legs to secure their spot at Wembley in the final.

Old town hero Mats Hummels scored the vital goal at the Parc des Princes, sending Dortmund back to Wembley 11 years after their last Champions League Final appearance. 

Reus announced on the third of May that he would be leaving Dortmund after over 20 years spent in the youth and first team at the club, making this final his last match.

Reus was part of the Dortmund team that played in their last Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 2013, losing 2-1 due to Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben's goals. 

According to The Guardian, speaking after the game, Reus said: "(It's) Indescribable. After more than 10 years, I am in the final with Borussia again."

The Dortmund legend has scored 170 goals in 428 appearances for the club since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012, but fighting under the shadow of Bayern Munich has meant his trophy haul is rather unimpressive.

According to BBC Sport, Reus has won the DFB-Pokal twice, captaining the side in their most recent triumph in 2021. Dortmund missed out on winning the Bundesliga on the final day last season, losing to Bayern on goal difference.

Marco Reus is a Borussia Dortmund legend because he decided to stick with the club through thick and thin, avoiding the temptation of joining Bayern Munich or any other European giant.

The Bundesliga website reports that Reus' former teammates Robert Lewandowski, Mario Gotze, and Raphael Guerreiro all made the switch to Bayern. While Mats Hummels joined Bayern, but moved back to Dortmund.

Dortmund legend Reus has been linked with joining Bayern during his whole career, and chose to join Dortmund over Bayern in 2012 after leaving Monchengladbach because of his loyalty to the club. 

According to the website GOAL, Reus said: "The request came [from Bayern], as it did from other clubs. I have the greatest respect for Bayern Munich and what the club has been doing for decades."

"I always wanted to play for BVB. It was always the club my heart drew me to. When I played in Gladbach at the time, it was clear to me: within the Bundesliga, I would only change to Dortmund, otherwise I would go abroad."

In a footballing world where loyalty to one club has become even rarer, Marco Reus has shown becoming a legend is just as impactful as winning a haul of trophies in a career. 

The stars have not always aligned for Marco Reus at Borussia Dortmund, but his coach Edin Terzic, a fellow BVB fan, described him as 'a living legend,' The Guardian reports.
