US Open champion Wyndham Clark’s emotional tribute to his mother
Wyndham Clark won his maiden major title at US Open on Sunday, defeating Rory McIlroy by a shot at the Los Angeles Country Club.
Clark picked up his first major on Father's Day, but it was his Mum to who he dedicated his victory in his ceremonial speech.
While playing golf at Oklahoma State in 2013, Clark's mum Lisa lost her battle with breast cancer aged 54.
According to skysports.co.uk, before her passing, Clark's mom told him to 'Play big,' a saying Clark has taken with him on his professional journey.
In his post-victory speech, Clark had some inspirational words following his impressive 72 holes at LACC.
"She was so positive and such a motivator in what she did. She'd be crying tears of joy. All I wish is that my mom could be here, and I could hug her, and we could celebrate together."
"I just felt like my mom was watching over me today. She can't be here, I miss you mom, but I feel like I've worked so hard and dreamed about this moment for so long."
"She called me 'winner' when I was little, so she would just say, 'I love you, winner.' I know my mom is proud of me. She's always been proud of me, regardless of how or what I'm doing."
"There's been so many times I've visualized being here in front of you guys and winning this championship. I just feel like it was my time."
Clark has had an under-the-radar career on the PGA Tour but picked up his first tour win in May, securing the Wells Fargo Championship.
Clark had a three-shot lead on Rory McIlroy at one stage in the final round, but back-to-back bogeys cut his lead to just one with two holes to play.
The 29-year-old held his nerve with two holes remaining, parring both and finishing one shot ahead of McIlroy.
According to skysports.co.uk, Clark said: "I hit some great shots coming down on 17 and 18. I felt like I kept my emotions in check as much as I could until the green on 18."
Clark arrived on the final day behind Rickie Fowler, who had shot a US Open record 62 on the opening day of the tournament.
Despite a near-perfect three rounds, Fowler shot a final score of 75, carding a five-over par score and ultimately finishing fifth.
Clark has been on a run of late, so can he win his second major at The Open Championship in July?
