Sheffield United honour Maddy Cusack with emotional pre-match tribute
Sheffield United held a pre-match tribute to former midfielder Maddy Cusack who tragically passed away last week.
Cusack was only 27 when she passed away, the cause of her death is yet to be announced.
The club came together to memorialise Cusack with fans laying wreaths and tributes outside the stadium.
Former teammates of Cusack, including women’s team captain Sophie Barker joined Cusack’s family in the centre-circle before kick-off where they laid a wreath of their own.
The club announced, “Ahead of the Newcastle game, we will celebrate and honour the life of Maddy Cusack, a loved and respected figure of the Sheffield United family”
Sheffield United also arranged for the club flag to be flown at half-mast for the duration of Sunday.
The Sheffield United first team paid their respects to Cusack with every member wearing a shirt with her name and squad number on it during the pre-match memorial service.
Fans of both teams honoured a minute of silence before the game and applauded during the eighth minute, in recognition of Cusack’s squad number.
The club also noted in their statement, “There will forever be a void in the hearts of everyone connected to the club.”
