MLS player cops 'indefinite' ban after punching opponent and playing under a fake name
A CF Montreal player has been banned after his attempt at playing amateur football undercover has been unveiled, per reporting from Dans Les Coulisses.
Matko Miljevic, 22, plays in midfield for CF Montreal but after struggling for playing time, he decided to use a fake name and play at a much lower level in the QCSL league.
Miljevic played for a local team in Laval, north of Montreal in a league way below the level he was used to playing, it was no surprise he immediately impressed.
Miljevic played for a local team in Laval, north of Montreal in a league way below the level he was used to playing, it was no surprise he immediately impressed.
In his first three games for the club, Miljevic scored six goals and won a Man of the Match award.
Unfortunately for Miljevic, his ruse was quickly discovered by league officials who refused to let him continue playing using his alias.
Upon hearing this ruling, Miljevic decided to register with his real name but never played another match, according to reports from The Sun.
In a shocking twist, Miljevic found himself in more hot water after supporting a friend from the sideline for a different amateur team. He quickly found himself in a physical confrontation with an opposing fan.
Dans Les Coulisses reports Miljevic and the opposing fan started shouting and jostling before Miljevic threw a punch, “striking him [the opposing fan] directly in the face”.
As a result of this fight, referees and league officials stepped in and abandoned the game.
As a result of his indiscretions, Miljevic has been “suspended indefinitely” from the QCSL League.
League officials for the QCSL released a damning statement about Mijevic in which they said, “The guy is out, the league doesn’t want to see him anymore, not just one the field but in all its facilities. He did not act like a pro, not even an amateur worthy of the name.”
In the same statement, the QCSL also said, “The QCSL is a serious league that has never accepted such gestures. It was not his first ‘story’ in the league. The victim is doing well and should not have any after-effects, but is still seriously considering filing a criminal complaint for assault.”
According to Dans Les Coulisses’ reporting in Marca, the victim of the punch said, “He's not welcome here anymore. It wasn't just this incident. He's had past run-ins in the league.”
Miljevic somehow did all of this whilst keeping his professional club in the dark. CF Montreal have confirmed to reporters they had no knowledge of this situation.
CF Montreal will certainly want to investigate their midfielder given his grievous breach of contract. Mijevic is being paid half a million CAD a year to play for CF Montreal, not on artificial surfaces in Laval.
Matko Miljevic’s career looked to be going in a very different direction when he was a member of the Boca Juniors academy and playing in the USA U20s only a few years ago.
