Football star calls out against human rights groups in support of 'beautiful' Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is the new hotspot in football. Lately, many superstars have signed astronomical contracts in the Middle East, with the latest being Belgium's Yannick Carrasco.
The winger signed a contract with Al-Shabab FC until the summer of 2027, in a move that involved a €15 million transfer fee. Carrasco is leaving Atlético Madrid at the age of 30, while he is still at the height of his powers.
Carrasco himself gathered the press during the international break with Belgium this week to talk about the reasons behind his rather surprising transfer. Inevitably, he was asked about the poor human rights situation in Saudi Arabia, with Carrasco taking a rather surprising position.
Saudi Arabia has been widely criticised by human rights organisations, which the Belgian does not support.
"Cristiano is there with his wife and has an ordinary life there," Carrasco is quoted by Sportstar.
"Neymar, Benzema, I went there myself. I see how women live there, and how people go about their lives. Honestly, it is a beautiful country," he continued.
"It is hard to judge if you only listen to what people say about it. You have to experience it yourself," Carrasco added.
Carrasco could have stayed in Europe, as he was also reportedly on FC Barcelona's radar. He admitted, however, that money played a role in his decision.
"It’s a profession. When you have an opportunity, you think twice," Carrasco explained.
Will we see Carrasco back in Europe after his adventure in Saudi Arabia?
