'The Apprentice'

The title 'The Apprentice' is closely related to Donald Trump, thanks to his famous reality show in which he trained entrepreneurs. That a film about his life has that same title makes it clear that its creator is going for a direct comparison.

Ali Abbasi

Director Ali Abbasi confirmed this after presenting the film at the Cannes Festival. "There is no nice metaphorical way to deal with the rising wave of fascism. There’s only the messy way. There’s only the the banal way," he commented at the film's presentation.

"It’s time to make movies political again"

The Danish-nationalized Iranian director believes that "the good people have been quiet for too long. So, I think it’s time to make movies relevant. It's time to make movies political again." And so he has done it, with a fine satire of Donald Trump that has not sat well with the candidate for the Presidency of the United States.

Lawsuit on the way

So much so, that the businessman has already confirmed that he will take legal action against the film, as confirmed by his campaign spokesperson, Steve Cheung, in statements to 'Variety'.

"Sensationalizes lies"

A lawsuit that will address the "blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers. This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked." Furthermore, he considers the film to be "this is election interference by Hollywood elites."

Measuring the success of lawsuits

Ali Abbasi, far from being intimidated by the lawsuit, did not hesitate to respond after watching the film in Cannes. "Everybody talks about him suing a lot of people. They don't talk about his success rate."

What if they watch the movie together?

What's more, the director jokingly offered to accompany Donald Trump to a screening to see the film, ensuring that it could surprise him.

Looking to the past

The film, starring Sebastian Stan, in the role of Donald Trump, represents the businessman in the years in which he forged the basis of his current fame, drawing a protagonist without principles but from a comic point of view that takes some situations to the absurd.

Controversial scenes

However, Ali Abbasi has included some very specific scenes that are undoubtedly what Steve Cheung is referring to when he talks about blatantly false claims.

Liposuction and abuse

For example, one in which the protagonist appears undergoing liposuction or another scene in which he physically abuses Ivana Trump, his first wife, played by Maria Bakalova. Jeremy Strong and Martin Donovan are also part of the cast.

While waiting to see what the lawsuit turns out to be, what seems to be a reality is that this controversy has given a publicity boost to the film that, in any other production, would have cost millions of dollars.
