Blood Simple (1984)

A very young Frances McDormand plays Abby, the wife of a wealthy and jealous husband who hires a private detective to watch his wife and subsequently sends him to kill her. With this film, Joel Coen won The Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Director.

Raising Arizona (1987)

Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, and Frances McDormand were cast in this film, and Nicolas Cage received an American Comedy Award nomination for Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture. 'Raising Arizona' follows a couple unable to conceive or adopt children, especially because of Cage's character's criminal past. They decide to kidnap a baby from a couple with quintuplets and things go crazy.

Miller's Crossing (1990)

Set in the Prohibition-era United States, the film revolves around Tom Reagan, a morally ambiguous advisor to a powerful Irish mob boss named Leo O'Bannon. He gets into trouble when shifting allegiances between two gangs. The cast includes Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, John Turturro, Marcia Gay Harden, and Steve Buscemi.

 

Barton Fink (1991)

A highly acclaimed film, nominated for three Oscars, 'Barton Fink' tells the story of an idealistic Broadway playwright at the height of his success. He is offered the opportunity to write a screenplay in Hollywood and moves to California in hopes of making a difference. However, the infernal reality of Hollywood takes its toll on him. At the Cannes Film Festival, Joel Coen won the Palme d'Or and Best Director award while John Turturro was recognized as the Best Actor.

The Hud s uc ker Proxy (1994)

In this comedy, set in the 1950s, a recent college graduate played by Tim Robbins arrives in New York looking for a job. He gets involved with a company whose board of directors, led by the ruthless Sidney J. Mussburger (Paul Newman), conspires to drive down the price of the company's stock and buy it back at a lower price to take control of the company.

Fargo (1996)

A famous Coen movie that also inspired a successful series. Set in Minnesota, it tells the story of a car salesman who sets up a kidnapping scheme that goes wrong. Frances McDormand, the local police officer cracking the case, got an Oscar for her role, while the Coen brothers won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The cast also included William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, and Harve Presnell.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

This classic features Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Steve Buscemi in a story of friends with memorable looks and dialogues. It follows Jeffrey 'The Dude' Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) as he gets mistaken for a wealthy man, Jeffrey Lebowski, and pursued by criminals looking to get back the money the other Lebowski owes them.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

Based on Homer's epic poem 'The Odyssey,' this acclaimed Coen film follows three fugitives who search for a hidden stash while running for the police. The star-studded cast includes George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, John Goodman, and Holly Hunter. 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' was nominated for two Oscars: one for Best Adapted Screenplay and one for Cinematography.

The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)

Another typical Coen production was this neo-noir crime story set in late 1940s California, where a modest barber becomes entangled in a web of blackmail, murder, and deceit. The film got an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. In the cast, we have big names like Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, James Gandolfini, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Jenkins, Tony Shalhoub, and Jon Polito.

Intolerable Cruelty (2003)

This romantic comedy stars George Clooney as a divorce attorney and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a woman battling her husband. While Clooney's character is falling for the woman, she vows to take revenge on the lawyer and her ex-husband, thus causing dangerous and hilarious situations.

The Ladykillers (2004)

In this remake of the British movie of the same name, Tom Hanks leads a group of criminals who plan a heist at a casino while posing as musicians. Along with Hanks, J.K. Simmons, Marlon Wayans, Tzi Ma, Irma P. Hall, and Ryan Hurst are in the cast of this dark comedy.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

This Coen film won four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for the Coen Brothers, Best Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of the 21st century. The neo-Western thriller shows an assassin on the heels of an antelope hunter after he takes a large amount of drugs and cash from a gang of criminals. Alongside Bardem, the cast included Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, Josh Brolin, Kelly Macdonald, and Garret Dillahunt.

Burn After Reading (2008)

This three-time BAFTA-nominated movie had among its cast Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, and Richard Jenkins. It's a hilarious dark comedy following a circle of eccentric characters who become involved in a mysterious CIA operation.

A Serious Man (2009)

Once again the Brothers got two Oscar nominations for their work. One was for Best Original Screenplay and the other for Best Picture. The movie is set in 1967 and tells the story of Larry Gopnik, a Midwestern physics professor whose life falls apart amidst a series of personal and professional crises. This time, a star-studded cast is traded for one of lesser-known actors such as Michael Stuhlbarg, Aaron Wolff, and Sari Lennick.

True Grit (2010)

Once again the Coen brothers got multiple Oscar nominations for their film. They included Best Picture, Best Director for the Coen brothers, and Best Actor for Jeff Bridges. Other stars in the movie are Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Brolin.

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

Oscar Isaac plays a talented but emotionally troubled folk singer who is struggling to make a name for himself. Along with Isaac, the cast includes Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Adam Driver, and Justin Timberlake.

Hail, Caesar! (2016)

George Clooney returned once again to work with the Coen brothers on this dark comedy. Set in 1950s Hollywood, the film follows a day in the life of a man tasked with keeping the various productions at Capitol Pictures running smoothly. He deals with everything from managing the personal lives of the studio's stars to handling press inquiries and negotiating with various stakeholders.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

In six segments, this movie tells different stories about the Old West. Exploring themes such as fate, mortality, and greed, 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs' was nominated for three Oscars: Best Adapted Screenplay (the Coen brothers), Best Costume Design, and Best Original Song.

The Tragedy of Macbeth - Joel Coen (2021)

The Coen brothers have also made projects independently. 'The Tragedy of Macbeth,' an adaptation of Shakespeare's play starring Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington, was directed by Joel Coen. It got three Oscar nominations, including Best Actor for Denzel Washington.

Drive-Away Dolls - Ethan Coen (2024)

The latest is Ethan Coen's dark comedy about two gay women (played by Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) who have to go on the run from mobsters after they happen upon a valuable suitcase. Joey Slotnick, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Matt Damon, and Pedro Pascal are also in the cast.
