Celebrities who seem to have disappeared
These celebrities were, at one time, stars in the world of show business. Now it seems as if they have disappeared completely. For example, the famous Olsen twins: Mary-Kate and Ashley. Whatever happened to them?
Mary-Kate hasn't done any acting since 2011 when she filmed 'Beastly.' Of the few things we know about her, most striking is her marriage - and subsequent divorce - with Oliver Sarkozy, the half-brother of France's former president Nicolas Sarkozy.
For her part, Mary-Kate's twin sister Ashley shot her last film in 2010: 'I'm Still Here'. After that, she devoted all of her time to the fashion empire she and her sister had created.
When Harry Potter ended, people expected to see Rupert Grint in many other productions. But he took a different turn. Considering he was a millionaire at the age of 20, he limited himself to some low-key projects.
Rupert Grint seems to have become invisible. After lending his looks to an American Harry Potter-themed attraction park in 2010, he did mostly production work, some guest roles in series, and voice acting. In April 2020 he announced that he was going to be a father.
The Irish actor Jack Gleeson is known for his role as Joffrey Baratheon, one of the bad guys in the series 'Games of Thrones' (2011-2014). He left his career after the series, at age 22, reportedly because so many people hated him for that role.
The actor suffered much abuse and decided to leave showbizz because people were unable to distinguish between reality and fiction. "The truth is that when I accepted the role I didn't imagine that people would hate the character so much," he said.
Cameron Diaz was at the top of her game when she decided to retire from acting. Her last film was made in 2014: 'Annie'. "I'm literally doing nothing. This is so cool," Diaz told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. "I'm semi-retired, well actually, I'm retired."
Although she occasionally appears on social media, Cameron is mostly dedicated to her family. In early 2020 she became the mother of a little girl: Raddix.
He was such a big star, the boy from 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Pay it forward.' But then he grew up, and with puberty came oblivion.
Having grown out of his baby face, Osment was less interesting for production companies. He never left showbizz, though. Osment tried Broadway, in a play that lasted one week only, and is now the occasional guest star in series or a voice in animation films and video games.
Meg Ryan was a big Hollywood star in the 1990s. She achieved fame with titles such as 'When Harry Met Sally,' 'French Kiss,' and 'You've Got Mail'. But where is Meg Ryan today?
In the 2010s, Meg Ryan has been mainly invisible. Her acting work seems to have been phased out. In 2019, Ryan admitted that she realized she never really had a vocation for acting.
Drummer Meg White was usually the quiet one of the White Stripes. Her then-husband Jack White did most of the singing and talking. But without her drum, there was no "Seven Nation Army," the song many regard as one of the iconic anthems of the 2000s. The group split up in 2011.
As Rolling Stone says, "Meg's disappearance has been pretty absolute over the past few years. ... Jack White, meanwhile, has played lots of White Stripes classics at his solo gigs. Most bands eventually reunite, but this may be an exception."
Daniel Day Lewis is an incredibly gifted English-Irish actor who won no less than three Oscars for Best Lead Actor, among many others. 'Gangs of New York,' 'There Will Be Blood,' 'Lincoln,' 'The Last of the Mohicans'... he's an all too familiar face in cinema history of the past decades.
Suddenly, in 2017, Daniel Day Lewis announced that he was retiring. And since he keeps his private life (with his wife Rebecca Miller) very private, we don't know much about him anymore. Sometimes he is seen chilling on the streets of New York or in Ireland and the UK.
Before the world knew him as Michael 'Crocodile' Dundee, Paul Hogan already had an admirable comedy career in Australia. Abroad, however, he would only be known for his three Aussie-meets-big-city-USA films.
After the last Crocodile Dundee in 2001, Hogan just kind of disappeared from the international spotlights. He was married to 'Dundee' co-star Lisa Kozlowski, but that ended in 2014. With a birth date in 1939, Hogan now has a respectable retirement age.
