Which institutions has Trump modified so far?
The Trump Administration started less than a month ago but has already pushed for deep and swift changes to the Federal Government, from National Security to Health or Education.
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the secretive group of young engineers who work with him have pushed most of the changes.
The team has gained full access to the offices of several institutions and systems, but federal judges have stopped it in some instances. Still, the White House has pushed policies with a clear Musk signature.
An evident example was an email encouraging 2 million federal workers to resign and accept eight months of payments, similar to one Musk sent Twitter employees when he took over.
According to the Wall Street Journal, more than 40,000 federal workers have taken the deal, unsure whether they will receive the payment. The Government has only funds until March.
Still, asking for resignation was not the only tactic to reshape the Federal workforce. So, which institutions have changed in the first few days of the Trump Administration?
The reshaping started with the Department of Justice. The Trump Administration reassigned key senior officials across multiple divisions, effectively demoting them.
The changes have also affected National Security agencies, such as the CIA, which, CNN reported, became the first major security agency to offer buyouts to its employees.
The Trump Administration also fired around two dozen prosecutors who investigated the January 6 insurrection and asked for a list of the FBI agents who participated. The President said he would fire “some.”
According to the New York Times, the White House also ordered 160 national security staffers to stay home while assessing which of the experts aligned with Trump's agenda.
The changes also affect other areas of the Federal Government, such as Health, Education, and aid agencies. They started by placing 2,000 USAID workers on Administrative leave.
All the USAID staff were locked out of their offices, while Democrat lawmakers complained about the attempts to illegally eliminate the agency without Congress approval. A Federal judge stopped the order.
The next target was the Department of Education. Following President Trump's executive order banning DEI, the administration put dozens of Education Department workers on administrative leave.
According to the Wall Street Journal, over 60 employees who voluntarily participated in DEI programs or received diversity training received an email a Friday night informing them they were on administrative leave.
A WSJ exclusive revealed that the White House is also reviewing ways to eliminate the Department as part of Musk's DOGE overhaul. It was one of the President's campaign proposals and Project 2025 goals.
Another WSJ exclusive disclosed that the White House expects to fire thousands of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services workers through an executive order.
